held in the balance

In contrast with Lord Crow, the Undefeated, showing the fragile side of nature. Inspired partly by Jared Diamond's book Collapse which explores what makes some societies survive and others collapse and the large part that environmental damage, caused by over population, has in a societies collapse. The delicate balance within nature and how the removal of one piece of the puzzle can cause disastrous affects. How in man's hands, lush landscapes can be over harvested/farmed and over time turned into a barren wasteland that never recovers. Our environment, on which our future depends, hangs in the balance.

Delicate porcelain eggs held within a nest of hard rusty wire. Each egg dappled with the rust stained imprints of moths. The nest lies motherless, who will protect these vulnerable new lives? Their destiny is held in the balance, to thrive or to be abandoned of the care they need to survive.

Moths and crows are a recurring theme in my work. The moths symbolize man's self-destructive tendencies, while the crows, the ability to adapt and survive. I believe we carry both aspects within us.
